Paul-Louis Courier (1772-1825) est un grand écrivain que doivent redécouvrir ceux qui lisent, aiment, enseignent la littérature du XIXe siècle ; cet auteur singulier se proclamait vigneron (et il l'était vraiment), quand il signait ces pamphlets qui ont contribué à démolir par le ridicule la Restauration. II fait partie de notre histoire, c'est un moment de notre liberté politique ; pour lui la petite feuille pamphlétaire devait être l'arme d'une démocratie directe. Ce protestataire infatigable a poursuivi de ses plaisanteries ces adversaires, qui ont la vie dure, hélas : les politiques qui n'écoutent personne, les bureaucraties en délire, les juges trop sûrs d'eux, les fiscalités écrasantes, les clergés envahissants ou les gendarmes trop zélés. Mais cet homme qui se dresse tout seul contre toute la machine politique est un écrivain unique, un inventeur littéraire, qui a dans le romantisme un rôle de fondateur; Stendhal l'a respecté et adoré, ils ont parallèlement défini le romantisme comme littérature de la modernité; et en même temps il réunit toutes les traditions, il en est l'héritier vivant et créateur : c'est un helléniste universellement estimé, et un peu maniaque, il imite quand il est chef d'escadron dans l'artillerie à cheval la manière antique de monter, il est amoureux fou du petit grand roman grec Daphnis et Chloé de Longus ; Sainte-Beuve devait dire que sa traduction était supérieure à l'original. On le compare au Pascal des Provinciales, à Voltaire évidemment, lui-même retrouve spontanément la langue et le style des grands écrivains du XVIe siècle, dont il est imprégné, comme il l'est des Fables de La Fontaine; pour purger sa peine de prison à Sainte-Pélagie, il emporte son volume de La Fontaine. Il y a bien un miracle de Courier : original et archaïque, classique et moderne, il utilise un merveilleux français, tout le français, une langue très riche et très libre, raffinée et naturelle.
